Entrepreneurial Skills Development, Wealth and Employment Creation
Objective
To improve the economic welfare of teachers and students.
The increasing un- employment in Uganda and the continued frustration of teachers over small salaries calls for a new approach in wealth creation. More focus should now be put towards Small and Medium Enterprises. But in Uganda only 10% of the businesses started survive their 5th birth day. This reflects a skills and attitudinal gap in addition to lack of technical support.
Under the 2007 – 2011 UMTA strategic plans, the MUTE cooperative society was formed and registered. The purpose of MUTE is to enable teachers improve their welfare through savings, investing and offering teacher friendly credit services.
UMTA is working to strengthen MUTE Cooperative society in terms of resources and relevancy. The organization will also take on a new critical role of developing entrepreneurial skills for the teachers and students. The emerging economic trends and constant demands for salary increase requires teachers to learn to make money while at the same time remaining effective in teaching. The students also need the entrepreneurial skills to contribute to education logistics but also to prepare for the world of employment, with emphasis on self employment.
UMTA is partnering with other organizations to run business clinics for teachers, pilot micro projects for schools, teachers and students and start entrepreneurship clubs/lessons for students. The organization also continueing to advocate for improved teacher welfare in both government and private institutions.
MUTE Co-operative Society
Introduction
MUTE Cooperative Society is a legal entity established in 2007 in fulfillment of UMTA’s strategic plan 2007 – 2011 to improve the welfare of teachers. MUTE Cooperative Society was registered by Registrar of Co-operatives on 28 April, 2011 registration No. 9590RCS
Membership
MUTE Cooperative Society currently has a registered membership of 1000 Muslim teachers. Our target is to expand membership to 10,000 teachers by 2016. Capital
The Society has so far raised capital from membership shares of UGX. 30,000,000. Our target is to raise UGX. 100,000,000 as seed money to drive the growth and reach of the cooperative across the country.

- To encourage the youth and women to start and operate income generating projects.
- Keep members focused on their respective professional duties by keeping their morals high, because of the economic empowerment.
- Provide bridge financing for our institutions instead of them resorting to bank loans and overdrafts.
